ITF World Tennis Number (WTN)

9 MINUTE READ

The ITF World Tennis Number is a rating system for all tennis players across the world, creating a global player standard to enable more appropriate matches between players of similar levels from recreational to professional tennis. This will make it easier for everyone who plays tennis in Britain to organise and play against opponents of a similar standard.

Whether you’re playing at Wimbledon (we can dream), or just meeting a friend to play matches at your local court (much more likely), everyone’s welcome – and everyone will have their own World Tennis Number.

You can get an ITF World Tennis Number for free

ITF Algorithm Changes – August 2026

World Tennis will be making enhancements to the World Tennis Number (WTN) calculation on Wednesday 12 August 2026.

This enhancement to the WTN algorithm will reposition some groups of players on the current scale of 40-1. While player's across the country are likely to see their number adjusted, movement relative to others in their own age groups should be similar if they play regularly. The changes being made are based on feedback from players, coaches and national governing bodies, as well as using player data to inform the decision-making process.

  1. The rating algorithm will now operate on a rolling three-year rating period creating a more efficient and sustainable rating system.
  2. The rating calculation will now incorporate game-level scoring within each set to truly reflect how close a match was.
  3. To better reflect how players can change physically in terms of strength and power, especially juniors, a player development adjustment has been introduced to reflect natural development in strength, speed and endurance. For most active players who compete regularly, the adjustment will be very small.
  4. A rating decay mechanism has been introduced to account for players returning after time away from competition to better reflect a player’s current playing level.
